cd drive isnt reconized by xp!!!

my cd-rom drive is not working at all. it worked earlier
but stopped all the sudden. its most likly not a virus
becuase i wasnt connected to the internet, unless it was
already there or something. bois says its connected, it
just doesnt register on my computer. please give me some
suggestions
