CD Burning

I use my CD-RW to back up files and to transfer them to another PC. I do
not
use the capability for audio, DVD's, Movies, etc. I have been using Roxio
since it came with my PC, but I have had continuous problems with trays
locking, software bugs, etc. If I uninstall Roxio and revert to the simpler,
built-in XP Burner, what am I giving up in terms of speed, features, etc ?.
Again, I am dealing only with data files.

Hi Pat

I have found Roxio 5 basic to work just fine with WinXP as
long as the updates have been applied. In Roxio CD Creator 5
go to the Internet menu - Web Check-up and get the latest upgrade.
Should be version 5.3.5.10. The original version must be installed
to run the upgrade.

I have to agree with Pat. I have had lots of frustration with Roxio 5. For
one thing, I have had to toss about 10 blanks because the recording process
would start up, and mid-way through, the drawer would pop open and eject the
disk and the program would display some obscure error message. It's lucky the
price of blanks has dropped so much! I try to double-click on the message for
an explanation and nothing ever happens. I have read the help file and tried
defragging the hard drive to speed things up in case there is a buffer problem
-- with no luck (in fact I do that every time I try to copy a disk just to be
on the safe side). And after reading your post, I found web check-up (both on
the big initial menu screen, and as a drop down selection from the menu bar;
and when I click in either case, nothing at all happens. I will next try to go
to the Roxio site without using the Roxio program and try to download the
update you suggested.

I had been planning to copy my error messages down and posting them here for an
explanation, but your post caught my attention tonight so I figured I respond.
I have had all kinds of dumb things happening with this program; unexpected
screens pop up over other screens; the program has locked up my computer
completely a couple times such that I had to cut power to it to get it to boot
up again (control-alt-del didn't work at all). And it's not like I use it a
lot; I have successfully copied maybe 6 or 7 discs, but that's it.

I too would be interested in knowing what I might be missing using the native
XP CD burning utility. I've had it "up to here" with Roxio as it now
functions; I hope I can get the update and that it works. Thanks.

Yes, there were issues with earlier versions of Roxio 5 but the
seem to be fixed with the latest upgrade. Here's the link.

You are probably using the Direct CD (now Drag to Disk) that comes from
Roxio, that writes each file individually to CD-RW so it can be
individually modified.

The inbuilt burning is not that method, but one that builds up a
collection of files to burn in a batch as a session - closely similar to
the way Easy CD Creator itself does, but in a very 'Lite' form. If you
have been using Direct CD, I wold suggest trying using that batch
method, but doing it with Easy CD Creator itself, as you have it
