CD Burning

Ever since I upgraded to Service Pack 2 in Windows XP Home Edition I haven't
been able to write to my CD drive, even though all other software will
function just fine. In addition, my Nero 5.5 InCD doesn't want to work on
the drive either. Otherwise I have no problem with the drive and Nero's CD
Testing program reports no problem with the drive any more than Windows XP
does. Has anyone any insights as to why this might be the case? I contact
Microsoft Help and Support and they provided me with a non-public patch but
it made no difference.

Thank You, Will. I'll read the article. But off the top of my head, where
it's getting thinner and thinner, I don't think I have a problem with
virtual memory. The CD recognizes the files are there. But it just won't
burn them to disk. And with InCD or Drag-to-Disc the drive works and works
and works for a LONG time but does nothing. The only way I can abort the
process is to reboot and grab the CD out of the drive before it finishes
booting up and grabs the CD for all time again. It appears the CD disc is
destroyed. Then I erase it in CDPlayer Pro 3 (the open source freebee) and
the disc is fine again.
But I appreciate your response and I WILL read the article.

CD drive capable of CD -/+ RW????
Some older CD drives can only handle CD R 's is your capable of more??
Some drives(older) can only handle -RW or +RW not both......what can yours
handle??
CD RW formatted with INCD ???
Did this problem start recently?? at one time it all worked?? different CD
type??

It's a Philips CDD5301, came with the puter when bought in 2003, so not that
old, altho ancient in computer terms. "Old" being that morning's purchase.

It burned fine in Windows when I first bought it. But I have gone thru a
number of upgrades and hot fixes provided by MS. I never noticed WHAT
upgrade or hot fix saw the end of that function.

I've done a firmware upgrade too, provided by Philips' site. Got me stumped.
Works fine in other software. But not MS Windows. I've included a dump of
the drive info as provided by Nero's infotool.

Hi,

I still use Nero ver 5.5.10.56 (bundled) and InCd ver 4.3.23.2 with XP Pro
SP2, without to much trouble..
Have you updated your Nero and InCd, see above..?
I also turned off the XP inbuilt CD burning Wiz too..
Cheers

So according to the Nero report:
it can read CD-R....CD-RW....DVD ROM.....DVD-R...DVD-RW DVD-R DL

but can only record to
CD-R and CD-RW

which brings up what type of CD disc are you trying to use??

Sometimes its not worth the headache to spend days trying to troubleshoot
when a Newer drive with more capabilities costs only 40.00 bucks Canadian
