You may wish to consult the www.roxio.com site to see if they have
information that pertains to this. But you can also try the following:
1) make certain you have updated Easy CD Creator 5 to the latest update
version > A patch can be found can be located at www.roxio.com (I am
referring to updating not upgrading to Easy Media Creator 7 however that is
an excellent option)

2) ensure you have turned off XP's built in burning software. Right click
your CD Writer drive icon and select Properties->Recording tab and disable
ten recording software.

3) From Easy CD Creator there is likely an option, when you click the button
to burn disk, that allows you to change the burn speed. It may have been
previously set at 2X and now defaults to that speed everytime.

What happens if you tell it to burn at a faster speed?

Is it an internal or external writer? (If external are you on USB 1.0, 1.1
or 2?)

It could also be a limitation of the CD-R that you are
using. Most CD-Rs won't write at certain speeds
