ALREADY ONE IN THE DRIVE. THIS HAPPENS WITH TWO SPERATE BURNING PROGRAMS ONE
OF WICH USED TO WORK FINE

THANKS

I just installed XP SP2 and my cdrw became totally unusable.
It was visible in my computer but the properties showed that
filesystem was RAW.

And what was wrong ..grrhh... in the registry one section was totally missing.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\CDFS
with proper values.
I Manually added them and now my cd is working.

It was very annoying feature from SP2.

Another was that explorer (and dr.watson) crashed every
time I toucehd my desktop. And fix for this was to remove non-microsoft
applications as default application from some extensions ..

kaarlo,

What should be in this setting? Mine is also missing but I have no idea what
to put in there.

Cheers

Hi,

for me following did the thing:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\CDFS]
"Prefetch"=dword:00004000
"PrefetchTail"=dword:00004000
"Cachesize"=hex:ff,ff,00,00

I have a similar problem, although I do not yet have SP2 installed on my
laptop.
Thr DVD-CD/RW in my Sony laptop has stopped reading /checking disks on
insert. If I reboot the machine with a different CD in the drive it reads
it, but if I then change the disk it still shows the same disk in explorer
view, If I read the disk the contents of the new disk show up but the label
remains the same. It only sees a CD as blank if I first reboot with the
Blank media in the drive (several types tried).
I have tried setting Autorun defaults without success, I also checked the
registry and under :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
the only entries are as follows:
(default) REG_SZ
value not set
ntfsDisable8dot3NameCreation REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
Win31FileSystem REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
Win95TruncatedExtensions REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

If this is the problem can anyone give me a step by step on changing/adding
the CDFS values below.

regards
Freddie

Thanks kaarlo,

I tried this and, well lets say it didn't make it any worse.

I am now officially giving up on this drive, I think it may be a real
hardware fault.
I have tried uninstalling SP2 and still it didnt work. I then scrapped a
partition and installed XP from my original CD and it still failed.

I have ordered a sexy new DVD/CD rewriter and will try that, so expect me
back Thursday with a whole new set of problems!!!

PS
While setting up the original XP on a separate partition I made the small
mistake of loading my broadband modem and checking my mail ( before
installing the filewall ). I know what a plonker, but it was 1am and I was
tired and frustrated. It took about 2 minutes for somebody to notice my
unprotected IP address and start an attack on my PC. Thankfully there was
nothing there to attack. Its amazing how long the 4 seconds that you have to
hold in the power button can be when you can see strange software running
rampant all over the machine in Task Manager.

Anyway thank you all for the help.
