Is there any way to set the CD/DVD player NOT to start
automatically with the insertion of a disc? This was easy
to do in earlier Windows programs, but can't find how to
in XP Home.

Right click on the drive - properties - auto play

Right click on the drive\ click on properties\ click on auto play in
properties\ click on select an action to perform\ select 'Take no action'..

If you only want a temporary solution hold down the shift key until computer
stops trying to access CD.
