CD Autorun -- Help needed

F

Frank Bohan

I am burning a CD which will have three folder on it. I know how to use
[autorun] to start a program automatically, but I cannot figure out how to
display the three folders (with or without a list of contents) on insertion
of the CD, so a choice can be made from the three folders. Copies of the CD
will be going to different people, whose file structure may be different, in
particular the CD drive may have a different letter. Is there somewhere a
freeware program which will simplify this procedure? TIA for any
suggestions.

You might need a script or batch file of some kind.
Perhaps you can get help in alt.msdos.batch.nt (also covers XP)

I've been using ShellExe on the Pricelessware CDs - I set it up to start
a web page in the root directory of the CD. (Drive letters aren't a
problem if you use relative URLs.)

The ShellExe web page has some good info about configuring autorun files
that will work for *everybody*.

Lots more choices here (one of these days I'm going to try them). ;)

Is it possible to make a menu asa *.html-file with several libraries
with a setup-program in each lib (for installing programs from CD) ?

I believe that can be done. FWIW the Pricelessware CD is set up like a
download site - but with instant access to the files because they're on
the CD.

The Pricelessware CD's web pages are on-line (the program files are not
so you'll get error messages if you try to access them). Program files
are linked on the description pages and in a table that's here:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/Archives/2006PL-CD/2006/2006PL-CD-programs.php
(You'll be able to navigate to the other pages from there.)

Thanks Susan. I've had a quick look at the ShellExe page which looks
interesting. I'm not sure what "relative URLs means - can you explain or
point me in the direction of an explanation? I think a bit of
experimentation is called for.

Relative addressing just means directions that start from where you are
now rather than a fixed point like the North Pole. ;) I use relative
addressing extensively on the Pricelessware site. For examples, view the
source for any web page - for instance:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/PL2006BUSINESS-HOME.php

A HREF="http://www.pricelesswarehome.org" (absolute address)

A HREF="../2006/about2006PL.php" (relative address, "../" means go UP
one directory)

A HREF="PL2006CategoryIndex.php (relative address for a file that's in
the same directory)

Susan: Thanks for your explanation of relative URLs. I seem to have
accidentally deleted your post, but I had worked out the meaning already, by
looking at the PLW CD (great minds think alike!). ShellExe is certainly
good, and I have achieved what I wanted to do. It is the only one which
opens documents in the user's default program(s). Another one I tried would
only work with specified exe files, and a second one was too complicated.
Thanks again for your help with this, and to the others who responded.

Hi Frank,

Glad you achieved your goal, glad you like ShellExe, glad I was able to
help. :) :) :)
