CD and DVD drives quit working

The CD ROM and DVD drives quit functioning properly. The
computer will not read the CD ROM. The DVD drive door
won't even open. The 3.5 floppy still works fine. I run
WinXP, SP2 on a Compaq Presario machine. I know it's not
the connection. They are fine. What can I do to restore
the drives? Is the problem in the registry?

The drive will not open? Something hardware related is most likely the
problem. How do you know it's not the connection? I'd contact Compaq if it's
still under warranty or be prepaired to replace the drive yourself or with
the service of a computer professional.
