Categories Error in Outlook 2007

J

Jason

We have several Outlook clients accessing a certain Exchange mailbox.
When we right-click the Category field on an email message in this
mailbox and select a category, we get an error message stating "Could
not open the item. Try again." We have tried multiple times, and tried
restarting Outlook and rebooting our machines, but this error still occurs.

What's strange is if we open the email and select a category, it works
fine. We only get the error when trying to categorize items directly
from the Inbox view.

This issue occurs on multiple Outlook clients and with multiple users,
so I don't think this is a machine-specific issue. All of our clients
are running Windows XP SP2 with Outlook 2007.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks.

Hi Jason,

Does the issue only occur with a specific Exchange mailbox? Does the issue also occur with the Sent Items folder?

Perform the steps below to see if it is related to the Outlook program or the specific mailbox
==================
1. In Outlook 2007, create a new local Outlook date File (click File > New > Outlook Data File).
2. Drag an email message to the test new Personal Folder in the folder list.
3. Go to the Personal Folder. Add a category for the email message.
What is the result?

If possible, create a new Exchange mailbox to test the issue.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

Not to hijack this thread but I have the same problem.

Running XP SP2 all patched to date, Office 2007.

I have a personal and a shared mailbox attached to my Outlook. I am also the
owner of the shared mailbox.

Here are some interesting observations:
I can always use the right click a message and set the category as I am
accessing my main mailbox. (IE the one I am logged into at the time, via the
profile selector) But when I log into my personal one and view the shared
mailbox I CAN select the categories using the right click/menu option BUT if
I wait less than a minute I lose that functionality and end up with the same
error message "could not open the item" And this is on the same exact email
that I just was able to update but less than a minute ago.

If you have any ideas please let me know!
Thanks

Hi,
I'm also having this problem... this is happening on more than one mailbox,
and only when right clicking on emails in the inbox list... when you open an
item and update the category, it's fine.

It would be great if someone could come up with any suggestions on this one...
