Just discovered that the default settings for my USB card reader is
"Performance" - eg caching is enabled.

Perhaps not the best choice for removable media?

No if you don't usually use the memory card reader as an external
drive. Turning it off will slow the overall performance but it also
can be removed without needing to "stop" the device for removal.
