Caption misnumbering & automatic repaginating

I'm using Word 2000, and I'm trying to insert captions for figures in my
document. For the very first figure, I did the necessary to insert the
caption, but nothing happened, I did not see anything. However, the
additional twelve figures or so in the chapter numbered correctly. Can
anyone help here?
My other problem is an automatic repagination that occurs if I try to
copy/cut and paste a picture from one part of the chapter to another. The
document undergoes a drastic repagination and what was 62 pages 'grows' into
200+ pages. What am I doing wrong?

Problems with repagination might indicate a corrupt document. Display
nonprinting marks, for example by pressing Ctrl+Shift+8 (acts as a toggle).
Then copy the contents of the document, except for the final paragraph mark
(¶) into a new file.
