Caps lock key turning itself on.

We have a keyboarding class here at school. When the students begin to learn
the shift key and used it several times in each row of keyboard practice, we
began to have a problem with Microsoft Word program setting the Caps Lock on.
How can we keep this from happening?

The most likely thing is that the users themselves have inadvertently
pressed Caps Lock. This is especially likely for anyone who learned to type
on a typewriter (and you can even configure Windows to make the Shift key
turn off Caps Lock just as it does Shift Lock on a typewriter). If this is a
real problem, there is a setting in the Windows Accessibility Options to
sound a tone whenever Caps Lock is turned on or off.

Sounds suspicious of inexpereinced fingers hitting the Caps Lock key by
mistake. I don't knwo of anything in Word that could cause this (or reason
why). Can you ( as a teacher) duplicate this at will?

They're probably turning on StickyKeys, which is one of several Windows
features meant to help people with special needs. The shortcut to turn it on
is to press the Shift key five times in a row, and that could easily be
happening to your students.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Accessibility Options. Uncheck the
"Use StickyKeys" box and any others that are checked. Also click each
Settings button and uncheck the "Use shortcut" option to prevent
accidentally turning on the features.
