Capitals and Lower case in AutoText

B

Bob Boudewyns

Friends, occasionally I'd like to add an item to AutoText which in use may
sometimes use an initial capital and sometimes will not. I can easily add
one or the other to the AutoText list. But I am then prevented from adding
the other, and when I use the item in a document Word replaces the
capitalization of what I have typed with the lower case of the AutoText
item.

Is there a way to control the capitalization of AutoText items?

If you add the word in lowercase, then the result will follow your
formatting of the entry name. That is, if you use an initial cap or all caps
when typing the entry name, the entry will be inserted with an initial cap
or all caps.

Suzanne, thanks for your response! And I believe you are describing what
should happen, but ...

As an example, I have added "simplicity" to AutoText. When I begin to type
in a document "Simp" the pop up window offers to replace it and I press
enter and it is replaced with "simplicity" not "Simplicity."

Any idea what is going on? Do I misunderstand something?

I'm beginning to think that the caps rule does not work with AutoText, but
that it does with AutoCorrect! For example, if I enter an auto correct
keyword of simp and a correction of simplicity then whatever format of caps
I select for typing simp (Simp; SIMP) that is the format provided of the
replacement text. I suspect I should use AutoCorrect for the purpose I am
seeking.

The rule I stated was indeed for AutoCorrect. I'm sorry I misled you--missed
that you were using AutoText.
