Can't use Windows Update, Restore, WMP, etc. after installing XP

Hi all,

Yesterday I finally upgraded from win98SE to XP Home edition and now find that a whole host
of programs and utilities won't work. I initially thought my Norton antivirus reinstallation
was bad since I can't seem to configure it but I find that I can't use Windows Media Player
(I get "an internal application error has occurred" message when I try to run it). I also
get a blank IE screen when I attempt to run Windows update. I think I had already run the
recommended updates when I noticed some of these problems. I thought I'd then roll back to a
pre-update restore point but I can't even find the restore utility now.

Has anyone else had any of these problems? I'm wondering if I should reinstall windows xp
but I really don't want to do a clean install if I can help it.
