Can't use system restore

I believe I corrupted my windows\system32\config\system file when attempting
to install IPOD from the Apple site. Windows will not restart, as it says the
aforementioned file is missing or corrupt. It says to go to the original
setup disk and type "r". I have done this. It asks which windows
installation I'd like to log into. I entered "1", which is the only one
given, C:\windows. I then get a C:\windows> prompt. At this point I tried
to type %systemroot%\system32\restore/rstrui.exe, but it says the command is
not recognized. The goal is to restore the system to its state before I
attempted the IPOD installation, but I can't get to that point. What do I do?

System Restore cannot be run from rhe Recovery Console.

You have a damaged or missing registry file. The following Microsoft
Knowledge Base article describes how to recover from this:

MVP Greg Palmer has a method which will automate the recovery process
a fair bit:

Good luck
