Can't use self created restore disks Vista Home Pre.

I purchased a HP a year ago, came with Vista Home Pre. system allowed
the creation of 1 set of restore disks, changed some hardware in the
HP the new hard drive had XP Pro on it I tryed to reinstall the Vista
Home Pre. error message said restore disk don't work, the first disk
starts to run then stops and says "must be valid operating system" I
guess that the restore disks I created don't recognize the new hard
drive, is there anyway to use these restore disks I paid for the
system, to go buy a new copy is $279.00, any ideas thanks in advance.
