Can't use FTP anymore.

Until recently I have always been able to FTP out to a
site to pick up data files. Now, it seems that I can
connect to the ftp site, but I can not get the data.

I can see other computers on the network (using ping in
the cmd window), but no other computers can see me on the
network once Windows has begun. Prior to Windows starting
other computers can see me on the network.

I think its possible that there is some service running on
my computer that is blocking others from seeing me.

Any ideas?

Yes, it's called a Firewall : )
...If it's enabled, and the rules aren't configured to allow incoming
connections as needed, then you are going to have unwanted behaviour.

I'm sure its not our firewall.

The last piece I guess I should have mentioned is that
others on the network are able to not only access the FTP
sites but they can also see one another. Its just my
computer that has mysteriously "disappeared" from their
sight. Since others are not having this problem, I assume
it is something in particular with my computer.

We have not made any changes to my machine or how it is
set up. Is there anything that is known that may run in
the background or undetected that might keep others on the
network from seeing my computer?

Thanks for the help!

It sure sounds firewall-like. What's the OS? If it's XP, it has
firewalling built in that can be turned on or off. What 3rd party
firewall software, like Symantec. If the software configured to
recognize certain IP segments as "safe", and you're on a different IP
segment now, that could definitely cause a problem too.

Any chance that a software type firewall could have been
installed on my machine without my knowledge? I don't
remember installing anything, but it seems that there must
be some personal firewall blocking incoming traffic. How
might I go about finding this mysterious firewall. I've
looked through my start menu and I haven't found anything
out of the ordinary. I'm running Windows 2000.

Hi Kristine,
Check to make sure that the "Server" service is still started, and remains
started, on the machine.
This is the service that manages serving connections to other machines.
Let me know if this helps.

The server service is started (automatically) and is
currently on.

If its a firewall issue, it seems that its started in the
background when Windows begins to boot up. Before that
point, when just the computer is booting, others can see
my computer. Any ideas on specific services or registries
that might enable some kind of firewall?

Not off-hand to be honest.
I would start by getting a copy of MSCONFIG.EXE from a Windows XP machine
(or an equivalent utility) and running to disable non-Microsoft services.

Did you look at the Network connection item to make sure it wasn't
firewalled (you still haven't mentioned what OS this is)? As far as 3rd
party products are concerned, I would look at services to see if there's
anything in there that looks like a firewall.
