Here's a good one.... My set up: Home wireless network,
desktop hard-wired to router, laptop wireless to router.
W2K, FP2000. Both PCs configured exact same way for
internet connection (TCP/IP) and every option in IE6 same.
My laptop can connect to my web server fine for ftp. My
desktop cannot connect - receiving this message "Could
not find web server at'ftp.webservername.com' on port 21.
Please make sure that the web server name is valid and
your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure the
everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily
out of service." Since my internet connection
configuration and my proxy settings for IE6 on both PCs
are the same; I can connect on my laptop OK; I can ping
server ok from my desktop; not sure what else is wrong --
this is driving me bonkers!!!

You only need to post one time and under one name. You'll get a response
when someone has something to suggest. Time and patience.

1. Pinging the server isn't the same as ftp'ing, because the ping command uses
port 80 and ftp uses port 21.
2. On the desktop, open Internet Explorer go to Tools > Options and click the
Advanced tab. Scroll down to the middle of the panel and make sure "Use Passive
FTP{for firewall and DSL modem compatibility}" is checked. Click Apply
You may have to reboot for the change to be effective.

Let us know if it works.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info.

The Use FTP Passive option was not checked,
I checked it, applied it, rebooted, but it
had no affect. Still cannot connect to server
via FP2K or AceFTP3. Advice from work was to
check my Linksys wrt54g router for setting that
might restrict that port that the desktop is on.
But, I can't find any settings that are port
specific. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Frank (the Needy one)

Have you tried it with the laptop and the wireless router shut down.

If I understand this correctly, both machines connect to the net via the
Linksys. If so, that tells me it's not a port 21 issue with the Linksys.

Steve,

Thanks for all your help. Problem solved. The only
thing I could tell that was different b/w my laptop
and my desktop, aside from non-applicable s/w, was
a load of 3rd party firewall s/w that I thought was
not active (this McAfee free firewall thing that keeps
prompting me to buy the next level version - so, I
thought I deactivated it when the messages stopped).
Apparently, it was blocking port 21. So, I uninstalled
it and it solved the problem. One key aspect to this
problem was the instantaneous error message (practically
before I pressed my click), was as though the port was
never getting far before it was denied - i.e., my own
firewall! Geez! Anyway, thanks for all your help. It
was a good learning experience (no pain, no gain, grrrrr)

Thanks again,
Frank (Needy)
