Hello Melvin,

Thank you for posting.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: You can not successfully
install Security Update MS05-041, you encounter the error ¡°this patch
can't be installed because it requires net framework 1.1 sp1 installed¡±.
Although you installed .net framework 1.1 SP1, the error occurs again. If
I'm off base, please feel free to let me know.

Since the error occurs after you installed .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, we may
need re-install .NET Framework 1.1 and SP1. Please follow the steps below:
1. Clink Start->Run, input appwiz.cpl, click OK
2. In ¡°Add or Remove Programs¡±, select Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1,
click Remove.
3. After the deletion, install .NET Framework 1.1 again. You can download
it by the link below:

4. Install .NET Framework 1.1 SP1. You can download it by the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-
BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en
5. Iinstall Security Update MS05-041 again. To check if the installation is
successful.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Hi Kenxl,

I agree, information as to how things turned out would be good.

Do you know, other than a yank and replace reinstall, is there a
known method to solve the .Net Framework installation failures?
In my WSUS serviced client machines I must say that updates
to the framework are the category of updates with the highest
failure rate. On servers I have found that if things known to be
using the framework are not first stopped, like IIS, then one is
quite likely to not have a successful framework update. Also,
once the update has failed it seems that something gets left in
an intermediate state such that the update will never work, one
case of which is what this poster mentioned where one MS
supplied test sees a specific version and need for update by
the update itself sees that it is not applicable.

Thanks for any insights,
Roger

Hello Melvie,

Thank you for the updates.

I am glad to know you will try my suggestions. I will be waiting for your
result.

Hi Roger,

Thank you for your information.

I have performed a lot of research, both in our internal knowledge base and
the Internet. I have found some similar issues. However, most of these
issues were eventually resolved by reinstallation. Therefore I would
suggest we perform a re-installation of .Net Framework. I know it is time
consuming, but it is the best and quickest method to resolve this issue.

Thanks Kenxl

For my own environment the issue is getting desktop people
to the client systems to do that. The support group would
rather not deliver the NetFx deltas from WSUS than have
a high visit rate ;-)

The sense I get is that more intelligence is needed in the
installer for NetFx updates.

Thanks again,
Roger
