Can't turn off "Automatic" update on links

[Excel 2000]: I have checked the "update remote
references" on the calc options menu, etc. Nothing
works. I want to be asked to update links, as I always
have in the past. Something has changed. Help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tools>Options>Edit. Check "ask to update automatic links".
