Can't start Outlook 2002 (XP)

Before the splash screen disappears, the Windows message appears which says:
"Microsoft Outlook has developed a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience...".

I have tried to open the program in Safe mode.
I have tried to open it in "detect and repair" - which completes successfully.
I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the program including
downloading and reinstalling all updates after a Microsoft defined "clean
boot", i.e. nothing running but microsoft services.
I have started outlook from Start/run using the command outlook /resetfolders.

Nothing has worked.

I had a "back door trogan" virus identified and destroyed by NAV several
days before this behavior began.

In addition to reinstalling the program, I have run a complete system virus
scan, defragged my hard drive and used Norton WinDoctor to fix registry
entries, missing files, etc.

Nothing has helped. I have had to switch to Outlook Express temporarily for
Email, but I'd like to get Outlook to work again.

Any suggestions?

Hi, Randy

When the error message popsup "Microsoft Outlook has encountered problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience..." click on click here in
blue to get the error signature and sent me the AppName and the ModName.
You can try this
- click on Start/Run and use the command outlook /safe
- create a new email profile Start/control panel/double click Mail icon and
click on show profile button then click on add button and create a new profile
Try this and let me know

Yvon,

Well, I didn't get you the error codes, I was too interested in trying your
suggestion. It worked... Now I have a data file that doesn't error out. This
AM before coming to this website, I found I could open Outlook successfully
in a different user profile on this computer.

I suspect the problem is a corrupt data file (my old OL profile). There is a
lot of important Email in that old file I'd like to recover. Maybe I can
restore from backup... I have Outlook's backup tool installed and have been
using it.

What is the likelihood of me importing the problem back into my new file? Is
there a data file repair tool I can use to repair the old file before I try
to import the old data?

You're confusing profile (a structure kept in the Windows Registry that
tells Outlook where to find services Outlook needs) with a Personal Folders
File (PST).
Maybe I can restore from backup... I have Outlook's backup
tool installed and have been using it.

It's probably still on disk. With Outlook closed, use Control Panel's
Folder Options applet to enable viewing hidden files and folders, if you're
using Windows 2000 or XP. Then open the Mail applet in Control Panel again
and click the Data Files button. Note the name of the PST Outlook is using.
Then click Add and browse to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and see if there is more than
one PST there. One should be the PST Outlook is currently using. The other
is most likely the old PST you had been using. Select it and click OK.

Start Outlook and examine the PST you added to make sure it contains your
old data. If so, click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. At the bottom left,
change the "Deliver new e-mail to the following location" drop-down to be
the PST you just added. Stop and restart Outlook. Now, right-click on the
old folder list and choose Close. You should be back to normal.
