Can't start Halo after installing Microsoft updates - is there a f

I recently ran Windows Update, which installed the following patches:
KB927802
KB928255
KB928843
KB931836
KB926255
KB927779
KB926436
KB925398
KB924667
KB924270
KB920213
KB923980
KB918118
KB914440
KB923694
KB917422
After the update, Halo would no longer start. When I tried to run it, the
usual splash screen would appear, followed some flashing as the game changed
my screen resolution. The splash screen would reappear full-screen, then
more flashing, then the splash screen appeared in some wide-screen format
(stretched horizontally, with black bars top and bottom). After this the
game would minimize itself and I'd be back to the desktop. I uninstalled
KB917422 (it caused problems with a securom-protected game in the past) but
no joy. Eventually I discovered I could get the game to run if I started it
at a command prompt with the -vidmode option (running the game in a window
also worked). Is there a proper fix for this?

System info: GA-965P-DQ6 mobo, e6400 @ 2.8GHz (OC), 2GB RAM, Raid 0, Radeon
X1900XTX 512MB with Catalyst 6.11, Windows XP Home SP2 plus recent updates,
Wireless laser desktop 6000 v2, Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver with latest
drivers, Belkin Bluetooth adapter, etc.

Thanks!

Hi kcconlin9319,

Have you connected to the Multiplayer servers?
They regularily update the game through Bungie
and that might quickly resolve the issue, otherwise
I would reinstall video drivers and try Halo again.

Game is up-to-date.

Updated to Catalyst 7.4 but the problem persists. Seems to be a timing
problem, as sometimes I can start the game normally, and sometimes I need to
use the -vidmode option. Sim City 4 and Star Wars Empire At War also have
the problem, but not Zoo Tycoon II or Age of Empires. Sometimes logging out
and logging into a different user account will cause a game to start or stop
working, and disabling the free AOL antivirus and Windows Defender seems to
help, but there's no consistency. Very frustrating.

Turns out my problem was Windows Defender (!) failing to unload the user
profile hive in the registry when my kids or I logged into a different user
account. Installing UPHClean solved the problem.
