Can't shut down

XP Home, laptop. This laptop runs fine until I use AOL
dial-up. AOL seems to run ok but afterwards the laptop
will not shut down. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
AOL. I have upgraded to the latest 9.0b. The problem
remains. AOL support is no help.
