cant share on xp

Joel

I'm running a 3 computer network, 2 xp's and one 98, once I could have all
3 talking to each other sharing files, but for some reason, ONE XP pro wont
share files, I can get out to the other computers, but they can;'t get in.

all sharing is on, on all drives, even tried turning it off and back on
again.

I disabled the XP firewall, even the instaklled firewall and I still cant
share my files.

maybe a service has been shut down that Im not aware of, but what service
would stop file sharing tothe computer ?

Any other ideas you might have would be appreciated

Joel.

Joel,

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

With XP Pro, and SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, and SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to
"Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it
an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

For XP Home, and for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest with Start - Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

What installed firewall are you referring to? Many third party firewalls can't
be successfully disabled, they have to be either configured properly, or un
installed.

I had the same problem you need to install Netbuei see attached artical
http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/winxpnet.html

Gordon,

Windows networking is built around TCP/IP, and uses NetBIOS Over TCP/IP as an
interface to file and printer sharing.

If there's a problem with TCP/IP, or with NBT, NetBEUI will provide a
workaround. But it will also add needless complexity, and may cause long term
stability problems.

If the problem experienced by the OP is caused by authentication /
authorisation, NetBEUI won't resolve anything.

Fix the problem. Don't add to it.

Cheers,
Chuck
