Can't share folders or printer.

I have a WinXP machine and a WinME on a small home network. I can work with
the Internet on either PC independently or jointly. I can ping either PC
from the other. I cannot share folders or a printer (located on the XP PC).
I used to be able to do this until my Access Point failed. When the AP was
replaced I could no longer share.

I have tried many things such as deleting all references to sharing and then
running Network Setup Wizard on the XP followed by using the Netsetup disk
on the ME. Nothing works.

Any suggestions anyone?

Peter.

Have you allowed files to be altered as well as shared? I had your problem
and that was the answer

Peter,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

Thank you Hans-Georg! That is the most comprehensive yet easy to
follow (keep it stupidly simple for the simply stupid, my motto as an
electrician!) page of information for networking issues I've ever seen.
Not only that, it gave me what I needed to solve a problem with my own
home networking (LAN and Cable broadband). Essentially, if the Linksys
BEFSR41 router/switch was connected to the cable modem then the two
systems on the LAN couldn't talk with each other. But both could access
the routers HTML page and the internet fine. One system is running XP
Pro full retail SP1 and the 'little' system is running W98. The answer
for me was to enable "Use NetBIOS over TCP/IP" and also disable ICF on
the XP machine which the Networking Wizard turned on no matter what I
wanted. Even in light of the fact that Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 is running.
There are also a couple of other tidbits that I'll look into, like
ensuring that the MTU matches with all 3 components. All in all, I'm
happy. My two systems now see each other fine and are able to use the
internet at the same time! :)

McG,

glad to hear that. I'm grateful for feedback, need to know what
works and what doesn't.

Hi Hans-Georg. Like McGrandpa your web site gave me the solution but in my
case it was only one way. After following your instructions my WinXP PC can
see the WinME PC but not the other way around. I have tried to perform an
analog of your WinXP instructions on the WinME PC, so far without success.

Peter,

unfortunately I don't know as much about Windows ME as about XP.
I don't even have a Windows ME installation near me.

Perhaps somebody else can help?

Hans-Georg
