Hi all,

I'm trying to setup file sharing with two of my machines running XP
Pro. The network looks as follows:

+------------+
| ADSL Modem |
+------------+
|
+----------+
| Firewall |
+----------+
|
+----------+
| Switch |
+----------+
|
+---+--------------+
| |
+----------+ +----------+
| Comp A | | Comp B |
+----------+ +----------+

I have assigned fixed IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 to comp A and B
respectively. The internal IP of the firewall is 192.168.1.1. The
firewall does source NAT. Both Comp A and B can access the
internet. They can also ping each other and transfer files using ftp
(I have enabled an FTP server on both of them). None of them is
currently using ICF. Both of them has one Ethernet, one Bluetooth and
one 1394 connection. The 1394's are not used.

On Comp B I ran the the network setup wizard, and it created a
bridge. In the bridge properties I changed from dynamic IP to the
address I mentioned above. In My Network Places on comp B under Mshome
I can see the shared folders on comp B.

On comp A I tried to do the same thing. When it created the bridge, it
tried to use the 1394 interface to connect to the computers on the
LAN, but not the Ethernet interface. Trying to select the Ethernet
interface did not work. When going into My Network Places I can see
*nothing* under Mshome.

I then ran the network setup wizard on comp A again and tried to
avoid the bridge by only selecting the ethernet interface in the
"Select the connections to bridge step". Now nothing is
bridged. However, when I go into properties for my Ethernet connection
"Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing For
Microsoft Networks" are unchecked and if I try to check them I get
"Your current selection will also _disable_ the following components:
Client for Microsoft Networks". I still can't see anything in My
Network Places on comp A.

What am I doing wrong?

If the Wizard creates a network bridge, open the Network Connections
folder, right click the network bridge, and delete it.

The problem with comp A is probably due to a corrupted Ethernet
network connection. Run Device Manager, un-install the Ethernet
network adapter, and re-install it. That will create a new network
connection that should have "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File
and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks" properly installed.

Thanks Steve. Uninstallining the ethernet adapter and reinstalling it
solved the problem. Now file sharing is working.

Much appreciated.

You're welcome, Johan. I don't know what causes the connection
corruption, but I've seen it on my computer and seen several reports
of it in the news group. I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve
the problem.
