Can't send replies

My Windows Mail has worked great for about 7 months. All of a sudden this
morning it stopped letting me send messages. I've since figured out that I
can send a new message, but if I reply to a message it won't send. When I
try to send it give me an error message saying "The message could not be
sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing
e-mail [SMTP] server." Any suggestions?

The provider is cox communications. I wouldn't think that it's the antivirus program but that hasn't changed at all.

Norton, McAfee, and Trend antivirus programs often cause problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.
 
That's not likely to be the complete error message. Please post
the complete error message.

The entire error message would help, but I would suspect that you have two
or more email accounts set up and the message you are replying to is one
addressed to an account other than the one you attached to. The ISP is
probably blocking port 25 for SMTP servers other than their own. WinMail
always tries to send through the account that downloaded the message. When
you open your reply click in the From field and choose the account for the
ISP you are actually connected to.

You get around Norton problems by uninstalling it, and then
replacing it with a more compatible antivirus. Download
and install the free version of Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their

If after uninstalling your antivirus, the problem with Windows
Mail persists, delete that corrupted mail account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate that account.
