Strange problem: The computer I am working on cannot send or receive
mail. Says the server does not respond (also says it can't find it).
Tried to ping the mail servers. No luck. Yes, they are up--can ping
from another computer.
I can ping 127.0.0.1 with success. Any other ping fails. Can't even
ping 192.168.0.1--the router)
Can't flush DNS--fails.
I can get out on the internet, however. No problem there.
Tried Outlook and Outlook Express with same results.
DNS is running on the computer.
O/S XP Home. SP2 installed.

Been beating my head against the keyboard and am afraid I might damage
it!!!

Hi ... It seem that the server address ( pop3 , smtp ) is enter incorrectly
, are you sure that it is correct , Also in the outgoing mail server area
,You might need to add a check mark on " My server requires authentication

....

pop and smtp are correct.

Note that I can't ping anything, either. That's independent of the
mail setup.

Do you have dialup or broadband?
Can you provide exact error messages?
Have you tried Network Diagnostics?
Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Diagnostics (on left
side panel)

Have you tried Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew

What is your current IP address and do you use DHCP? Does the current IP
address start 169........?

Cheers,

Cliff

Do you have a software firewall installed on your computer? If so, you need
to check to see if your mail program is blocked from sending and receiving
traffic by said firewall.

There is no firewall installed.

Have you try the reset buttom on the router ? Also do the basic , check
cables if they aren't broken or loose , plug the internet connection
directly just to this computer without router , see if you have windows
firewall on or off , Are you able to surf the web ?

OK--problem solved. There was a program called EZtrust EZ Firewall by
Computer Associates on the machine. Said it wasn't running. Had
expired. Couldn't delete it.
Finally deleted all its files and then tried to uninstall it. McAfee
resisted--you had to answer its question a certain way.
Actually got in uninstalled and now the system is working.
Thanks for your help.

I can't send e-mail, but am receiving incoming e-mail. Firewall is on. I
have recently changed to AVG anti-virus protection. My internet provider is
cable modum. What do I do to trace this problem?

To check if the problem is connected with AVG, try uninstalling the
program, restart your computer and try sending a message to yourself. If
that doesn't make any difference, reinstall AVG from your download file.

If you've recently switched to a cable modem from a dialup connection, you
may have to change your account settings. Contact your ISP for
instructions.
