I can't send or receive emails. I get this message everytime. This has
happened all of a sudden. No problems with webmail.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.optusnet.com.au', Server: 'mail.optusnet.com.au', Protocol: SMTP, Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Check your settings against your server help page here:

Try removing the account completely, close and re-open WM, rebuild the
account again.

That error message pertains only to sending.
When you got that error message, were you sending from home,
or on a laptop away from home?

Gary,

I am having the exact same problem as bcarman. When I send/receive, Windows
mail gives me the following message:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'test', Account: 'Windows Mail ATT', Server:
'smtp.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F"

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'Windows Mail ATT', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

I've been surfing the Net and have not found a working solutino yet. I DID
delete my ATT email account from Windows Mail and rebuilt it per ATT's
instructions from their website, but the problem persists. I have a Toshiba
Satellite L305 with Vista (which I think is overall a great OS) and have no
problems except this issue.

I appreciate any insight you have on this issue.

Sincerely,

Jon Whitmer

Your settings are correct.
"Unexpected" termination is almost always caused by interference
from an antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:
