Can't send large attachments

I am having difficulty with Office Outlook 2005 sending attachments greater
than about 200KB. If I send something larger, Outlook fails with a code
'0x800CCC0F', usually in less than 30 seconds. This is a consistent
repeatable problem, not intermittent.

I am on Office Outlook 2003 with all current patches and service packs
applied. I am running Windows XP Home, again with all current service packs
applied. I have Norton Intenet Security 2005. I am on a 512kbps DSL
connnection to my ISP, Integra Telecom. I am running through a Linksys
BFSR41 router.

I have contacted my ISP several times. The server is not down (smaller
e-mails go through consistently). I have disabled outgoing anti-virus
scanning (doesn't help). I have searched Microsoft and Symantec knowledge
bases and tried a number of things, none of which seems to work. My ISP tech
support suggested increasing the server timeout setting on my account to 5
minutes. I have also set the MTU setting on the router as suggested in MS
knowledge base article 813514. None of these have helped.

I have been able to get large attachments to go if I shut down Norton
Internet Security altogether, but that isn't acceptable in the long run.

Please help. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan Nelson

This makes it a NIS issue. Simply disablt the incoming/outgoing virusscanner
integration of NIS with Outlook. The on-access scanner provides the same
level of protection.

It's not as simple as this implies. The Symantec knowledge base points to
incorrect e-mail program settings (iDocument ID:2004121009243713). It seems
to me there is some kind of incompatibility between my installations of NIS
2005 and Outlook 2003 as it pertains to large attachments. Remember smaller
attachments work fine.

Do you have any thoughts on specific Outlook settings that I should
investigate? I have attempted to disable outgoing email scanning permanently
in NIS, and it hasn't had an effect. I need to disable NIS altogether to get
an e-mail to go. This is impractical, and a security risk. And it's just a
band-aid anyway.

I need to find a permanent solution. Any additional ideas and suggestions
will be appreciated.

That document doesn't describe your issue. The issue is with NIS taking too
long to deliver the message to the ISP or forgets to tell Outlook that it
has sends the message. This causes you the time-out errors. The solution I
gave you is not a band-aid. Like I said; incoming/outgoing mail
virusscanning doesn't offer any added value in protection. Contact Symantec
support when the interface of Norton doesn't allow you to properly disable
the integration of the virusscanner with Outlook. You can additionally check
in Outlook if Norton isn't listed as an add-in by going to Tools-> Options->
tab Other-> button Advanced Options-> buton COM-Addins/Addin Manager.
