Can't send from windows mail via virgin

Windows mail has worked fine for a year but last week stopped sending. Can
receive without any problem.
I am using windows vista
error message is:Subject 'Test', Account: 'POP3', Server: 'smtp.virgin.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 DSN', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D
Been on to Virgin but they haven't been able to help

Please can anyone help an ageing and frustrated silver surfer? would be
gratefully received

According to this.... (the instructions for OE are nearly identical for WM)

the server names are mail.virgin.net for both.

And you have SSL checked, and they say not to, on the website.
