no luck.

can anyone pleeeeeease help me?

Looks like you are running into a port 25 block. When you got that error
message, was your Internet connection being obtained from Optonline?
If not, what you experienced is normal. As a general rule, the owner of
the SMTP server you are using must be the same as the entity providing
your Internet connection at that moment. For more on this see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

Are you sending from a laptop, away from home?
The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently,
substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit
tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is.

Gary----> very helpful.. thank you. I no not use optonline as my isp -
guess that is the problem...
However I am using verizon as my isp and get a similar error with verizon.
could this be the same situation? The verizon error is:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.
The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'test
verizon', Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Authentication Required', Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

is this the same problem - port 25 even though verizon is my mail and my isp
in this case?

do I just have to use the web browser for both of these email ids... I would
hate to have to start yet another mail box on gmail just to be able to use
windows mail.... thanks for the help.

There might be other mistakes in your settings. I spotted only one .......
Your error message says " ......'550 5.7.1 Authentication Required' ..... "
Go back to the Servers window where you entered your SMTP server name,
look for the box that says " My server requires authentication " ( or words
of that nature ).
Put a checkmark in that box.

You might find the discussion at http://bit.ly/G46Pm or http://bit.ly/dB0PW
helpful, especially if, as is suggested in some of the discussion here,
you're trying to send from a site that blocks "Port 25" access to your IPS's
SMTP server. It's a problem that many people - travelers, folks who like to
work from coffee shops or hotel rooms, people who want to send personal email
from work or vice versa etc. - face. And while Webmail is sometimes the
answer, not everyone likes to change their workflow when they're away from
home.

As t-4-2 already advised you, the Verizon error is due to a missing
send authentication setting:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
Enable the "My server requires authentication" option.
