Can't see W98 machine on network

Just upg XP Pro from 2000 Pro. But now can't see my W98SE machine that's
sharing the printers. My other 2000 Pro machines can still see it but not
this XP.
Norton Internet Security on W98 has been disabled. Even installed NetBeui
along with TCP/IP on the XP.
Why can't I see it? Is there something I've overlooked?

Did you add a user account and password on the XP box that is identical
to what is being used on the Win98 box? Are the workgroups and subnet
the same?

TCP/IP & Subnet Mask are the same.
I've left the 98 machine logged on as the user on the XP. But I still can't
see it from the XP. I didn't think that would be the case cause the other
machines have different users and still able to access.

Is NETBIOS over TCP/IP enabled? Can you ping the Win98 machine or map a
drive using its IP address?

NetBIOS setting was at Default: from DHCP server.
I just tried it w/ NetBIOS over TCP/IP and still can not see the 98 machine.
It respond on ping. I tried to do a search by the computer name within the
domain and returns zero. I'm trying to add the shared printer from the 98
machine (\\computername\printer) and it can't find it.

Whoops, I meant WORKGROUP not DOMAIN.

Currently, the 98 lists itself and the 2000 machine in Network Neighborhood.
The 2000 machine lists itself and the 98 machine in its My Network Places.
The XP machine only lists the 2000 machine in My Network Places. It displays
itself only when I do a search for it. However, it just can't find the 98
machine.

I know you said the subnets are the same, and I don't want to offend,
but are you quite quite sure? It is easy to make a mistake and have
192.168.2.xxx when it should be 192.168.1.xxx. It just sounds like
you've got two different subnets. Also, (and again, I'm not trying to
offend) are you sure that none of the boxen are using Windows Internet
Connection Sharing in error? ICS makes the subnet 192.168.1.xxx which
is a problem if your router is using something different.

Just some thoughts.

Wishing you luck,

Malke

Thanks. Yes, the IPs are consistent as so the Subnet.
I'm not using a router, just a simple 10/100 hub. The 98 machine is the ICS
unit thus the sharer of all things (net connection and printers).

Ooh. A new wrinkle in the story. I know it's a bit tacky to suggest
spending money to solve a problem that *should* work, but you might
want to drop ICS (which can be unreliable) and buy a router. I just
bought a bunch of Belkin Wireless Cable/DSL Routers on sale and they
were about $40 w/rebate. If you don't need the wireless bit (although
why not plan ahead - they're cheap enough), regular routers are also
inexpensive.

The port on your hub could be bad, the cable could be bad. Routers are
A Good Thing and make networking very easy. So I hope you'll forgive my
suggestion that you buy new equipment, but I think you would be happy
with the results.

Good luck,

Malke

I agree. I've thought about that just to stay with the times. But now I need
to satisfy my curiosity as to why it's not working. The machines
successfully ping each other and they can all access the internet. That
should rule out hardware issues. That leaves network settings I suspect. But
I just don't know how to troubleshoot it.
I'm sure even with a router this workgroup difficulties will have similar
effects.

Hi,

Just curious, is the XP firewall disable and simple file
sharing disable. Are the regular file and print sharing
enabled for the network? I used to have that problem with
my XP system on my W2K network. Might want to give them a
shot.

Check. Simple FS disabled, File/Print Sharing installed.
The 98 machine has Norton Internet Security installed but I've tried with
the firewalls disabled on both sides with absolutely no luck.
