Can't see newsgroups

I cannot see the description of any of the newsgroups within
ms.news.microsoft.com. How can I subscribe to various topics if I can't see

I'm not sure I understand. How are you looking at the newsgroups? You
posted this message using Outlook Express, and I don't see where your
difficulty may be coming from, with OE. Are you having trouble reading
the names of the newsgroups, or are you looking for an explanatory
description beyond the newsgroup name?

Currently, there aren't any descriptions filled in for the Microsoft
Newsgroups hosted on msnews.microsoft.com, which would explain why you can't
see them.

Most of the newsgroups are named well enough to be recognizable. I am
working on collecting descriptions for all the newsgroups and on a procedure
for putting them in place. Due to the configuration of our server
environment, implementing the description field is not as straightforward as
you may think.

If you are looking for a newsgroup regarding a particular Microsoft
technology, feel free to email me directly and I'll help you find the
newsgroup you need.

You don't miss much, do you, John? I never even realized there was a
description field to be filled in! I've never seen anything in it, on

Many news servers don't maintain the data. Also, OE does not download it by
default. Try connecting to an ISP's NNTP server (if you have one) and pull
up the newsgroup list. Click the 'Search Descriptions' box and it should
prompt you to d/l the Newsgroup Descriptions. But even then, it's the rare
group that has one.
