Hi, I am trying to get my Win XP Home desktop to see files and
share it's connected printer to a Win XP Home laptop. I have
a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router that I hooked up directly to my
home PC, running Win XP Home (via ethernet). I then have a laptop that is
running Win XP Home, but it has a wireless card in it.

I successfully setup the router so that both machines can
connect to the Internet, but the 2 computers can't see
each other. Also, I want the laptop to be able to use
the printer that is connected directly to the desktop PC.

Both machines have been upgraded from WIN ME. While using the same
router/ethernet/notebook card, both machines accessed the internet and could
access files on the other machine and print from both machines. Since
changing to XP Home on both machines, each computer only has access to it's
own sources/files.

I have ran the network wizard multiple times successfully. But you still
can't see the other computer. I have shared the drives and the printer. I
have read for 5 hours through help files and tried whatever seemed good.
Still, I can't see the other computer.

Besides crying...I don't know what else to do.

In ME, I would go into control panel and make sure 'client for MS networks'
was there but I can't even find that on XP. The only login I use is the
User Accounts in XP.

Any help for a novice????

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Teri

Crying didn't work for me, so I tried some other things. One thing to
keep in mind is to make sure that the WinXP firewall is turned off and
that both machines belong to the same workgroup.

Hi,
You could also check whether the LAN connections on the computers are
bridged (on both computers);
1. Open network connections 2
2. Check whether there is a network connection that is shown as a
bridge icon.
3. I there is then disable it and then delete it.
If that doesn't work then please try the following:
Check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options -
View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled.
For XP Home with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), on each computer. Do any of the computers have a
software firewall (ICF or third party)? If so, you need to configure
them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138,
445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the
Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause
of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Luke.
