Can't see folders on Vista Computer from XP Laptop

I have set several folders on my Vista machine to share, turned off Password
Sharing (couldn't see anything with it on), set file sharing to on. In fact
everything in the Network and Sharing Center is on except Password Sharing.
Bit my Laptop can only see the public folder and an external drive I have
setup to share on my Vista machine.

Create matching user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not
need to be logged into the same account on all machines and the
passwords assigned to each user account can be different; the
accounts/passwords just need to exist and match on all machines. If you
wish a machine to boot directly to the Desktop (into one particular
user's account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions at
this link work for both XP and Vista:

I thought that you didn't have to do this if Password sharing is turned off.
In any case this did not work. I can see the folder now, but I get a messge
that I do not have permission to access it.

Just do it, OK? Then your networking will function properly. You can set
up your network with matching user accounts/passwords and have it work
or you can argue with me. Your choice, of course.

How to give Permissions are there, too.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

I DID do it. It didn't work. I said so in my last email. I wasn't arguing,
I was asking and informing. Read the whole email before you reply and get
nasty. You won't look so hot tempered.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried all of this and it did not work. The
folders appear now, but when I try to open them, I get an error messge that I
do not have access. I have even tried mapping the folders I want as network
drives, and still no no access.

I found the problem. Aparentely, you dohave to be logged into the account on
the non-vista machine, unlike you said below.
