Can't see Background colors

G

Guest

I have been using FP2000 for many years - with very few problems, but in
recent months I have been unable to see page Background Colors that I have
included in my website designs, in either the computer preview or the
published version.
I don't know how or why this fault has suddenly occurred.
Would someone kindly look at a recent website, designed for a friend, and
let me know if you can see a background color (light brown). It's at
www.brucehoteldundee.com
If you can see this color background and I cannot what can possibly explain
it?
I'm totally baffled!
Thanks for help.

Background colour shows in IE7 and FireFox. However, you need to define
the text colour.

Is your PC set to show at least 16 bit colour? (Right click on desktop,
choose Properties, then Settings tag). This may be needed to show the
shade you are using.

re-Thanx Ronx. At least I now know that viewers other than myself can see
background colours that I set. It also appears that you can see text
colours? Only a couple other than black - red-purple title on Home page and
only one word in red on 'People Say' page.
Color specified on desktop is 32bit.
It strikes me from what you say that my problem is with a setting on my
computer, probably to do with IE or Windows XP!
Does this make sense to you and have you any suggestion to make in this area?
I am very grateful for your help. Not out of the woods yet but I have a
feeling that I may be heading in the right direction - with your continued
help. I repeat my thanks. I was beginning to feel totally lost, puzzled and
despairing!

See http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/pages/Bruce_hotel.htm
This is a screen dump from my installation of FireFox, where I have set
the default text colour to orange.
Any orange text in my browser indicates text that has not had a colour
defined.

This image clearly shows the background colour - if you cannot see it
then you have a Windows or display problem. If you can see the
background colour in this image, then the problem probably lies with
your browser - have you tried with a different browser?

See on your dump the background colour thast I specified and hoped to see
when I browsed to the site.
I also see the orange text.
I will have to try and work out the implications of all of this. looks like
the problem is with my browser.
need a fe whours sleep at the moment so I will investigate in the morning
and get back to you.

I'm really stumped!
Have tried Firefox and cannot see any colors other than those in photographs
- no background colour, no text color other than black (though I can see them
in your Firefox Dump).
There is obviously something wrong with my computer, some setting, but what
and where?
I recently bought and installed Students Office 2003. Could this have
affected my PC setup?

In Internet Explorer, try this:
Tolls->Internet Options
Click Accessibility button
All the check boxes should be clear for normal use. It is possible that
the check box hiding colours is ticked.

The equivalent in FireFox 2 is:
Tools->Options - Content tab
Click colours button
Tick the box: "Allow pages to choose their own colours,..."
Click OK, then OK

This the place where I have set orange text with grey background, for
pages that do not specify text and background colours.

Did what you suggest. All is as it should be.
I am convinced that somewhere, deep within my computer, is a little hidden
tick that is preventing me from seeing background and text colours on
websites.
What it could be i simply cannot imagine.
I have run out of ideas, except perhaps to return my PC to a time when
things WERE working - if I can find thaty moment!
Any other notions? ANYTHING & EVERYTHING will be considered.
Thank you again.

I am out of ideas.
A Windows or Video problem would block out all or some colours, but in
both backgrounds and photo's.

Thanks for help.

This is a real long shot. In IE go into the "Tools" "Internet
Options" menu and the "Advanced" tab. Click on "Restore Advanced
Settings". This should restore your browser settings to their
default.

As a last resort you could click on Reset which also removes all add
ons.

I assume that you do not have any viruses present.

Good luck.

Thanks Guys! I have taken note of all suggestions and acted upon them - the
last move being to completely renew my IE7 programme, all without any effect,
I am sorry to say.
The problem remains a mystery.
My next step, failing other suggestions, will be to go back in time and see
if my computer remembers happier times when all was well! Not very hopeful,
but I will try ANYTHING to get rid of this stupid glitch - most annoying not
to be able to see the online reality of websites! Crazy!
Thanks again for your efforts.

I was having similar problems with both Firefox and IE not displaying
background colours, and I think I have found the solution to the
problem (well it fixes up mine anyway). On my PC it was to do with the
"Use High Contrast" option being enabled under the "Display" tab in
the Accessibility Options of the Control Panel. This setting is
toggled on and off by pressing Alt + left Shift + Print Screen. You
might have pressed this key combo by accident. Anyway, turn this
setting off and see what happens. As I said, this setting being
enabled prevented me from seeing backgrounds in both Firefox and IE
(no matter what the accessibity settings were in each of those
programs themselves). Hope this helps! :->

Sorry, following on from my previous post. I thought I would add that
even though "use high contrast" was enabled in the "accessibility
options", my colour scheme was not actually a high contrast one; so
even if you are not seeing a high contrast color theme, it's worth
checking out my previous posting.

Gentlemen! I use the word advisably - unless you are Ladies!
I really mean this. You really are are gentlemen -or ladies) - to have
taken the time to make suggestions. It's heartening. The social concern you
show is very much appreciated, in a world that sometimes seems bereft of
neighourlyness.
I have been offline for a few days, for I discovered that all efforts to
correct this apparently simple defect had absolutely no effect. Whatever the
problem was it was hidden too deep in the bowels of my computer.
So I tried a non-destructive recovery - and this did not work; and consulted
with a chap who works in IT - and he could not help; so, unwilling to put up
with the absence of colour background aand colour type I did a destructive
recovery - and everything works! So far!
It was a big sledgehammer to crack a small nut, but there was no other way,
and despite the labour of reinstalling all my programmes and saved files it
is going to be worth it. I had allowed too much rubbish to accumulate. Now
i am rid of it all. thanks be to God!
THANK ALL OFF YOU also, for being willing to help. I am very, very grateful.
Yours,
Mike O'Shea
