i have a home network with 6 pcs all going into a linksys router. i set it
up using the network connection wizard. all machines are running xp. there
is one computer that i can't get to. from all other computers, it shows up
on 'entire network' but if you try to open it, you get the error that you
don't have access. i have the problem computer running on my admin acct, but
i don't think that should matter since i can get to all the others whether
they're on admin or not. i think it's a conflict with one other computer on
the network because when that one is disconnected, i can access the problem
computer. i reinstalled xp on that box (b/c of a disk crash) and named it
with a unique name, but i still have the problem.
any ideas?

also, how come i can't share a partition? after the disk crash i put in a
300g drive and formatted it with 3 partitions. i wanted to be able to use
one of the partitions as a common data storage site, but i can't share it.

thanks,
chris

Make sure no firewall blocks the sharing first. Have you enabled sharing on the computer?

If you're running XP Home on all your PCs, you are probably running into the
5 connection limitation.

you've got to be kidding me. i never knew about such a limitation. you'd
think it would be printed in giant red letters on the XP installation disk.
and there's no workaround?

what about the sharing of the partition issue? any ideas there?

thanks for your help.

Upgrade the computer with the share to XP Pro. It has a ten connection
limit. Beyond that you need a server OS.
