Can't save word 97sr1 docs.

installed xp, reinstalled old works suite99 and word 97
will only save one (1) letter of the document name
in "save " and save as boxes. Then it
constantly "experiences problems" and must shut down.
I've tryed quite a bit on the knowledge base and and
normal.dot templates and different save options and can't
get it to go. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
