Can't save files to Novell network

G

Gregg

We have several users who save to a mapped drive on our
Novell network. Now they are receiving the following
message when saving to the network:
"Your changes could not be saved to 'filename.xls',
but were save to a temporary document named 'random file
name'. Close the existing document, then open the
temporary document and save it under a new name."

If we open the temp document and try to save under a new
name, we get the same message. The user can save the
file to the local hard drive without any problems.

Thanks,
Gregg Brown

Hi Gregg,

Do these users have permission to delete files on the network drive in
question? In Excel, the file save process is the following:

1) The file is first saved to a temporary file.
2) Once the save to the temporary file has been successfully completed, the
original .xls file is deleted.
3) The temporary file is then given the name of the deleted .xls file.

This means that if the user doesn't have delete permissions, the save
process fails at step 2 and you're left with a temporary file.

Hi Gregg,

Sorry to say that I haven't a clue why this is happening then. Were
these users ever able to save files to these network drives? If so, what has
been done to their machines that might cause the problem since they were
able to save and now.

My users (including myself) are experiencing this same
problem. I don't think that it is the problem mentioned
in the knowledge base article, because it is a relatively
new phenomenon. I honestly think it started after
applying the patch for blaster, but I cannot confirm that
this was when it began.

It does save the temporary file, but I am admin on the
Novell Server, and the workstation, and I have no
inheritance filters set up... This did not used to be an
issue.

It is only when saving to a Novell server that we are
experiencing this problem.

Hey guys

we are having the exact same problem with our excel files

Our office is also on novell - we have had nothing but problems since upgrading from windows 98/95 to win xp prof

We couldnt do vpn (internet upload features) communication on our F:drive (server - network) only on our workstations (c: drive). Now that our IT guys fixed that problem we cannot save any excel files to our F;drive - only to our workstations

Can someone please tell me why this is happening? It seems to be a problem with win xp and (maybe) with novell

I would be eternally grateful for any help at all. If I find out anything I will let you guys know too
Goodluck

Our IT guys stated that microsoft have a patch to fix this but it wont be coming out before the end of the year as it hasnt gone through all of the proper testing.

Hope you can hang out until then!

Until then, I was able to save it to my local disk and then drag n drop over to the network drive by using my computer.

Cheers
Sarah
