Can't save changes to document - any ideas why?

Sorry if I posted a blank. I'm not sure what happened to to teh first
one I started.

Here's the problem.

My parents have a word file that is set up to do address labels. They
have no idea how they started this setup. I can't find a template, so
they probably had somebody else do it for them. I do not use word
myself, so this is not familiar to me.

They wanted to make some changes to a couple addresses and remove the
name of somebody who recently died. It wouldn't be good to send the
card addressed to the couple when only one of them is alive.

So, he made the changes, and hit save. It printed the old file. He
closed it and reopened it. Still the old file. He made teh changes
again, and saved it as a new name. It's still the old file. No changes
were saved.

Any idea what we are doing wrong?

This is either a mail merge document that needs re-attaching to the data
file or a merged label document which needs to be edited directly. Between
