Running xp, sp2; noticed last auto update 2 months ago. Tried to run update
manually, but told 2 specific MS addresses must be in "trusted sites";
Checked--they are there. Tried several more times with same result. Today,
tried again, but told I "must be connected to internet". I am, through dsl
connection. What gives and how can I get around this?

Is your system date/time correct and do you have "Update Root
Certificates" ticked in Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Add Remove
Windows COmponents?

Time/date are fine. That box you referred to is checked.

Let me clarify original post--Noticing that my last automatic update was 2
months ago was what triggered my attempt to update manually. I don't know if
the auto update has been running and just not finding anything to update, or
not running at all, but if I can't get through manually, I assume that an
auto attempt would fail as well. Have rescheduled an auto attempt for this
evening, so I'll see what happens. Regardless, though, I should be able to
do this manually.
