Can't run .exe; get error message "The parameter is incorrect"

When I try to run an .exe, it doesn't run, and I get an error message saying
"The parameter is incorrect".

I'm running XP with SP2.

It sounds like your computer has been infested with some sort of
virus/trojan that is resetting the file association for .EXE files.

Make certain that your antivirus software is completely up to date
with the virus definitions not more than a week old and do a complete
virus scan of your hard drive. Then get a second opinion by doing a
free online virus scan at one of the following sites:
