can't restore

Hi Garry:

I tried that and it says everything is fine, except on
one of the hard drives, there was a yellow on the
ST340014A drive for Spin Retry Count. Below are the
results.

The scan disk was normal.

Now I've found another problem with my printer. I was
told that winspool.drv could not be found, but I have 3
of them under C:\windows\system and system32, and
servicepackfiles\i386. I try to reinstall the printer
drivers and the drivers could not be installed.

My next one is windows update won't work.

Something serious is happening, and I'm dead in the
water. I'm afraid to run another program.

Grrrrr, this is irritating.

I've done a Windows Repair, and no improvement. I
reinstalled all the XP updates, patches, hot fixes,
etc, and still the same, no improvement.

I'm still unable to do defraging of ntfs drives, unable
to access windows update, unable to do restore, and
can't run error-checking. I have no idea what other
problems there are.

I guess my next move is to do a complete reinstall.

thats the mesage I get when I've turned them off for
System Restore.

Disk 1: Contains C: [NTFS], windows, the programs, etc.
This is known as drive 2.

Disk 2: contains E: [FAT] and G: [NTFS] drives. This is
known as drive 0.

Disk 3: contains F: H: I: and J: Drives -- all FAT.
This is known as drive 1.

F: Contains My Documents, while all the others contains
my music, vids, downloads, old zipped win98 files,
garbage files [for investigating zipped files, exe
files, .xpi files, and so forth], and other stuff.

Drives E: to J: are turned off for System Restore.
When I turn then off, I get a message that they can't
be turned off, but when I look at it, then it says
"Turned Off." I get the same message in reverse about
turning them on for Monitoring. When I sent the last
list of error messages, I got the same message for all
the other drives.

But, why would the SR cause problems for the other
things, like error checking, defrag, windows update
site [which now takes me to msn.com], printing spool, etc.

Andy

You do not say what is the purpose of Disk 2?

Are all three drives conventional internal drives? Are they ever
removed?

In Disk Management I would expect to see Disk 0, Disk 1 and Disk 2. You
have no Disk 0?

Please confirm the system is not dual booting.

I think I'm back in business, or atleast 80%.

I ran Hijack This, CCleaner, Spy-bot, SmitfraudFix, and
a few others. They all told me I was fine, there were
no problems. Then I found Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Ran that, and it found one little problem. It
repaired that, rebooted, and now things are fine again.
I'm able to use the Restore function with no
problems. I can use the Error Checking with no
problems. Defrag works on the NTFS drives again. And
windows update goes to the MS update site, and not to
msn.com or google.com. And even my default fonts are back.

So, thanks everyone for your help.

Andy

Glad your problem is sorted.

Have you now installed an anti-virus and an anti-spyware programme so
that you have real time protection?

You were using UltimateDefrag. When I researched this programme I got
mixed messages. My advice is to uninstall. I found no conclusive
evidence against the programme but there are other alternatives which I
would be more comfotable using.

I was using the online webscanners from Trend Micro
HouseCall and Panada Security. Now, my winXP is
screwed and I can't get things back.

When I try using the Restore function, nothing happens.
I select the date, click Next, get a popup message
about certain drives being disabled [which I've done],
click OK, then I get to the confirmation screen. I
click Next, but nothing happens. I keep trying and
trying and still nothing.

Would anyone have any suggestions on what I should do next.

Thanks

Andy

only minutes comparred to far too long [hours] with

With most users they are once bitten twice shy. You are a glutton for
punishment.

An interesting relatively new entrant to the market is Defraggler
(freeware for home users) which I am currently testing. It is worth
looking at and does not with any negative reports. It also comes
from the software house providing cCleaner:

thats one of the programs i tried, and it too would
crash on the NTFS drives. And, it too is like the

It is not slow here. The quickest like the cheapest is not always the
best.

I would say you still have something wrong with your system.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
