When tryint to read the advanced setting of mt network connection, i
get the message that my WMI might be corrupted. I have performed three
system restores, I have deleted the WMI repository folder in the
c:\WINDOWS\system 32\webm directory and when I try to restart WMI from
the command line by typing net start winmgmt I get the following
meassage:

The Windows Management Instrumentaiton service is starting.
The Windows Management Instrumentaiton service could not be started.

The service did not report an error.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534

And when I type NET HELPMSG 3534, the returned message is:

The service did not report an error.

and then it returns to the command prompt.

I can't find anything else about WMI that seems to help. Please tell
me that I won't have to reinstall WinXP.

After doing a little more poking around I found this suggestion:

%windir%\system32\wbem\mofcomp %windir%\system32\wbem\hnetcfg.mof

which resulted in the following:

Microsoft (R) 32-bit MOF Compiler Version 5.1.2600.1106
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corp. 1997-2001. All rights reserved.
Parsing MOF file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\hnetcfg.mof
MOF file has been sucessfully parsed
Sorting data in the repository...
An error occurred while opening the namespace for object 1 defined on
lines 16-19:
Error number: 0x80041015, Facility WMI
Description: Transport Failure
Compiler returned error 0x80041015

Hope that helps some

So basically you're saying I need to do a complete XP reinstall. I
tried all the restore crap and followed al the KB directions for
reinstalling and restarting WMI and I would have accomplished the same
thing by staring blankly at my reflection in a brass doorkncoker for
three hours.

Total reinstall huh?

Was there any entries in the event log after the failed start attempt?

If you mean the file WinMgmt.log it is a series of entries like this:

(Fri Feb 25 07:22:01 2005.976403) : Unable to read 'Installation
Directory' from registry
