can't repair

When I open my database, it says it needs to be repaired. But when I click "Yes" to repair, it comes back with "Unrecognized database format..." "The database can't be repaired or isn't a Microsoft Access database file

Is there any hope of getting my data back?

Just to provide more info about my problem:

I'm running Access 2000. The database is on a network drive but only has two users. Both users have rebooted a few times since the problem. Also, the .ldb file has been deleted.
I tried opening a blank database, and then running the repair from there, but I get the same message saying its not possible.

The database has existed for over a year and we've compacted/repaired many times over that span.

First make copies. Only work on the copies since you may need the original
for a reclaim/restore service. Download a file named Jetcomp.exe from the
KnowledgeBase site:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273956

Run it on a copy. If that doesn't help, try importing into a new database.
If all else fails, most databases can be fixed by a repair service. Peter
Miller's is reasonable, and he can fix most of them:
