can't "repair" TCP/IP connection

For unknown reasons, my Win XP Home PC now cannot connect
to the Internet. I have not made any changes to the PC.
The computer shares a router with 2 other PCs at home.
These other PCs have no problem connecting to the
Internet. I have tried System Restore but it didn't work.
I have checked all the TCP/IP parameters against my other
computers that shares the same router. Everything is the
same except that when I look at Network Connections,
click on LAN Connection (its says enabled), then Support
tab, it says that Address Type is "Automatic Private
Address". This is different from my other working computer
which says "Assigned by DHCP". The IP address and subnet
mask are also different. But I do not know how to change
them.

When I click on "repair", it says that it is unable to
renew the IP address and to contact network administrator
or ISP.

Plse advise what do I need to do to restore my Internet
connection. Many thanks for your assistance.

If you recently removed spyware, the removal may have left your Layered
Service Provider stack corrupted. Post back if you need references to
repair tools.

Otherwise, the most likely explanation of your difficulty is a physical
error. Normally, if the cable connection is bad, you get an icon
notification in your system tray, but there can be other problems. One
thing I like to do is assign a static IP address that matches the subnet
that your router uses (usually 192.168.x.y). Make sure the x matches
your other computer address assignments but that y is different. Copy
the subnet mask and default gateway that your other computers are using.
If you can then see your other computers and access the Internet, the
problem is not physical, but you are having some difficulty with the
address assignment from the router. If you still can't access your other
computers, the Internet or the router, you can start breaking things
down from there.

Tang,

Try a known good cable / router port from one of the other computers. Swap
cable / router, see if the problem stays with this computer.

Give LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Swap the cable and am now able to access the internet. The
computer also has a wireless connection to the internet,
With the wireless connection, the problem still remains.

In any case,my thanks to Chuck and Kent for helping. Have
a good start to the week!
