Can't renew IP address

Windows XP SP1 on LAN, slow page loading; when I
click "repair" in network connections the message is "the
following steps of repair operation failed: Renewing the
IP address - please contact administrator (which happens
to be me but I obviously can't live up to the title).
What do I do now?

Bah!
go to start> run> type "cmd"
at the command prompt, type (w/o quotes) "ipconfig /renew"
what is the error?
something like "action was performed on something other
than a socket"?
-> if yes, see:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;811259

&&&&&&& OR &&&&&&&
go to start> run> type (w/o quotes) "msinfo32"
expand components> network> protocol
on the right hand side, count how many times the
word "Name" shows up in the entire list.
If Name < 10 or Name > 17, see:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;811259

if this is good, the question is: do you have a firewall?
If the answer is yes, uninstall it.

This should fix it, if not, check to make sure the cables
are good, not just plugged in, but intact

Hope this helps your problem.
Cheers,
Dave

Regarding the Name < 10 or Name > 17 part, there are many valid
configurations that would violate those rules. My usual advice is

"Look at the names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or the "RSVP xxx
Service Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and
uninstalling the owning program might help."
