Can't rename ordelete a file

I ran into a problem with Simply Accounting 2008 on a system running
Vista 64bit. The solution provided on the Simply Accounting website
is to rename (or delete) this file C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\Ole DB\OLEDB32.DLL and then re-install the accounting
program. Unfortunately *&^%$ Vista will not let me rename this file.
I even tried safe mode without success.

Is there some way I can do this or will I need to run some Linux
program?

Not quite so extreme. The \Program Files directory is a protected, system
folder. To delete or rename files within it, you must run explorer.exe or
cmd.exe with elevated privileges. Click start and type in one or the other,
then right click the start menu entry and use 'run as administrator'. Now
you should be able to perform the necessary file change.

In normal mode a user, even an admin user, does not have sufficient
privileges to modify system files unless specifically invoked, very much
like linux.

That was how I ran the Explorer but I did not think of trying the
Command Prompt. I ran CMD.exe as administrator, got to the correct
directory and then tried the rename command - "ACCESS DENIED". :-(

Linux has security too but I don't think it would have any trouble
wiping out Vista system files. I start up Ubuntu and it would
have worked except my drive C: is a raid drive and Ubuntu could not
find it. :-(

Thanks for the good luck but I need other suggestions.

Hi,

Alter permissions on the parent directory if needed. Also make sure no
element of the program that uses that file is active at the time you are
trying to delete it.

Even running as Administrator may leave you without permissions to modify
some files or folders, even ones that you have downloaded and installed. To
modify (copy, delete, rename) files or folders you can take Ownership of (in
your Username) and grant yourself Full Control permissions of the files or
folders in question described in the following tutorial.

Another way to gain access to modify files and folders includes going to the
Start button, typing in Windows Explorer, right-clicking on this and
selecting Run As Administrator. You should then have "elevated privileges"
to do whatever you wish to files in Windows Explorer. There is also a
program called Unlocker that you can use to gain access to modify files and
folders (see link below).
