Can't "Remove" Picture Folder from showing up in Windows Photo Gallery

Hi,

I keep all of my photos, screenshots, and clip art in the "Pictures' folder
on my PC which is where Windows Photo Gallery (WPG) points to for its gallery
management. I would like to EXCLUDE certain folders from showing up in WPG.
I did a search and found the link below;

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/b2aab152-a3d0-4da5-81ae-dd97313a2ef41033.mspx

....which says to simply "right-click" on the folder from within WPG and
select "Remove from Gallery". That WOULD be awesome, but when I right-click
as the instructions say, an option does not come up for me to "Remove from
Gallery". Only RENAME and DELETE are remotely related, and each of those
choices affect the actual folder on the C Drive and not just the WPG overlay.

Any suggestions as to what I might be able to do? I have considered just
keeping photos I don't want to show up in WPG in another folder besides
"Pictures", but I'd rather not take that step until I've exhausted the WPG
option.

Thanks

Hi G,

Are you trying to remove the default folders present in the Photo Gallery?

Well, you're lucky in a way... The problem of my friend John is that he
cannot open any photo in WPG. Even the Pictures folder won't work. Whenever
he tries to add any new folder, he gets an alert box saying the folder is a
system folder and WPG may not open it.

I read in some forum thread that another guy had the same problem, and the
only solution he found was to open another session (let's say his wife's)
because WPG would work in this session, while it would not in the
administrator session.

Any idea anyone? My friend John would really like to use the Vista Photo
Gallery.

Thanks

But the larger question is WHY? Why would anyone... and I mean ANYONE want
the "Program Files" or "Windows" folders in their WPG? It annoys me to no end
that I have to sift through a TON of icons and html graphics just to find my
photos by date.

That needs to be fixed, or there needs to be a workaround (registry edit or
something).

WPG was so annoying here that I stopped using it altogether.

You might look around online to see what's available.

Nobody would or should..
Those aren't part of the default folders... the only default folders should
be "Pictures" and "Videos".

If that was the case, then I should be able to use the "Remove" folders
feature. That option doesn't exist for me when I right-click on c:\Program
Files or c:\Windows (the two folders containing all of the images I would
like to remove). If I am missing something, please let me know.

My assumption was that those must be part of the "default" folders, hence I
cannot remove them. If not, then I think I have a different problem (and I'm
pretty sure it's not "pilot error").

Also, just to test, I added a folder from a different drive, and I could
remove it. That tells me that anything on my C:\ drive is a "default" folder
(awful).

I've never had those 2 folders listed in WPG or WLPG.
As a test, I tried to add them, but was only able to add "\Program files"
, albeit with a warning. And I was able to remove it promptly.
It wouldn't let me add "\Windows"

You might try deleting them in the Registry, if you're comfortable with
editing it. I found my entry located in

Hmmm... I tried changing that value to C:\Users, and it didn't seem to make a
difference. This is the kind of fix I was looking for, it just didn't seem to
matter.

I even tried a blank value and deleting the key (each time restarting WPG)

Do I need to change the value and then reboot for the changes to take
effect???

OK... I found the solution (it's actually two-fold, based on this thread and
another one). Here it is:
Step 1: Close WPG.
Step 2: Edit the registry value noted above
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Photo
Gallery\GalleryScopedFolders) to change it to whatever folder you want as the
default (for mine, I used "C:\Users").
Step 3: Rename the following file:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo
Gallery\Pictures.pd4 to Pictures.pd4.old or something of the like.
Step 4: Restart WPG.

That's it. Renaming the file (after the above fix), forces WPG to re-create
the file, only using the folder(s) I specified. Even my tags seem to be in
place!!!

Special thanks to John Inzer for the file fix!!!!
